The Münchhausen Legacy

Schloss & Gut Wendlinghausen, a grand property built in the Weser Renaissance style, rests in a geographical centre between Bielefeld, Hanover, Kassel and Dortmund.

In 1539, Hilmar von Münchhausen wed Lucia von Reden. Their son, Hilmar commissioned the castle and it was built between the years 1613-1616. The moated castle in constructed upon oak stakes and offers its guests and unparallel view of the surrounding landscape.

Hilmar von Münchhausen had a cousin, know to the world as „the Liar Barron”. The famous Barron von Münchhausen was well known for his outrageous tall tales concerning his far-flung adventures. He was often a welcome guest at the estate and would entertain everyone with his fabulous stories.

Since its construction, Schloss & Gut Wendlinghausen has been in the private ownership of the von Reden family. In 2001 and 2003 the castle was extensively renovated. This comprehensive restoration revived this ancestral home to its renewed captivating beauty.
